These scholarships are awarded annually to students between the ages of 17 and 25 who are planning to spend at least six consecutive months in a foreign country to increase their understanding of the language and culture of that country.
Normally at least five scholarships are awarded annually, each of which is valued between £500 and £1000 according to individual circumstances.
Applicants must be UK citizens and should have left school and either be awaiting entry to Higher Education, or be at University undergoing study abroad as an integral part of their course.
Scholars are expected to communicate with the Assistant Clerk at least twice during the time spent abroad and give an account of their progress. They may also be invited to Cutlers’ Hall upon their return to report on their experiences.
Applicants are required to complete an online application form and to supply the names of two referees, from whom letters of recommendation may be obtained.
Applicants should outline their plans/ideas relating to their proposed visit overseas. Details should include:- country/countries to be visited; the purpose of the visit(s) including language(s) to be studied; any methods of support anticipated as available whilst overseas; the length of time planned to be abroad and the date of departure.
The closing date for the submission of application forms is 12 June. Short listed applicants will be asked to interview via Skype soon after the closing date, and details of the awards will be announced in July.
